Robert Coste is the 1984 Olympic Champion in Men's Individual Épée and the father of both Jesse Coste and Nicholas Cox.

Appearance[]

Coste is blond and blue-eyed, features that he has passed on to his son Jesse. His youthful slenderness has matured into a stockier, more solid build.

Personality[]

In their assessment, Coste’s high school teachers highlighted his perseverance, as well as his very good behavior, friendly nature, and excellent class participation. While incredibly motivated as an individual fencer, Coste still needed to improve his overall teamwork with his peers.[1]

Coach Williams describes Coste during his time on the fencing circuit as dedicated and very focused on fencing, as well as driven and wanting to fence even when it seemed impossible.[2]

History[]

Robert Coste attended Kings Row Boys School. A report card from that time indicates that as a student, Coste excelled at most disciplines (particularly Physical Education), with the notable exception of Music, which he failed at least once.

With Coste on the team, Kings Row reached the 1979 state championship finals, although they failed to win the title.[3]

In 1980 he won "Best Individual Épée", a trophy which is still displayed at Kings Row.[2]

At the age of 21, Coste had already become World Champion, and on 8 August 1984 he proceeded to win Gold at the Olympics, becoming the first US Olympic Champion in épée.[4]

Coste is a left-handed fencer.[4][3]

During his fencing career, Coste became World Champion, as well as Olympic Champion in Men's Individual Épée.

Currently he coaches his son Jesse.

Relationships[]

Coste has a legitimate son, Jesse Coste, whom he personally coaches, in addition to providing him with other high-quality instruction and training.

Coste is unaware of the existence of another son, Nicholas Cox.[5] According to Nicholas' friend, Coste ditched Nicholas' mother.[4]

  • Coste has given the épée he used to win the Olympic title to his son Jesse[6]
